Designer Spotlight! Nest & Cot Interiors!

May 29, 2017

I have done so many wonderful projects with Nest & Cot Interiors that I wanted to feature some beautiful images of homes we have completed together as well spotlight it’s owner; designer  and friend Whitney Janke.

Growing up, Whitney admired her Mom’s knack as an Interior Designer. She would go with her hand in hand to pick out fabrics, and rearrange furniture. We worked in Whitney’s Mom’s LOVELY  home and my son Matthew happened to be high school friends with her brother.  Small world- but I never knew Whitney  was part of the clan!   Continuing to realize her passion, Whitney interned with Designer Susan Jackson while in college.

Whitney and her sister Ramsey purchased Nest & Cot children’s store in 2005.  I remember going there to pick up fabrics from clients or to buy baby gifts and just loving their aesthetic. Well you know how one thing leads to another and suddenly Whitney was being asked to design entire homes rather than just the kids zones! In this room we repainted the dollhouse! It was the mother’s when she was a child and now it has been passed down to her daughter!  I love that!

This wife and mom of three beautiful girls, found that in order to juggle it all she would need to simplify her career and either continue in retail or to focus on the design aspect of her business, but that she couldn’t do both. Boy do I understand those choices!

She decided to focus on design and looking at this stunning powder where we glazed the white trim to meld with the plaster-I can see why.  I love hanging the towels on the pedestal–it not only hides the pipes but is so pretty! She is really a master of mixing so many different elements-here we see industrial, modern, Asian and traditional all in one space!

I have done so many creative kitchens with Whitney as displayed in Segreto Vignettes. She always mixes an antique built in element like this fire-back with newer surfaces creating a space which uniquely suits each client.  As Whitney says “kitchens can be practically pretty”. Obsessed with organizing, Whitney builds in both beauty and functionality. Love the Dutch doors we finished which is perfect for the playroom beyond.

When her second sister Currie moved home from New York she decided to join Nest & Cot and they became a duo.

Maybe its because Whitney is so family oriented that her designs are  so warm, inviting and family friendly. Combining warm and cool tones, she created a dining space right in the kitchen.

Her favorite part of the job? Getting to know each client and the way they live. It’s what aspires her to find those special touches which make each home reflect the owners.

Inspired by Swedish and French design, Whitney’s interiors are clean, while instilling a cozy feel. You might see her around town shopping at some her favorite spots- Joyce Horn Antiques, Back Row Home, Watkins Culver, Grey Door, Janet Weibe, Chateau Domingue and Kuhl-Linscomb to name a few.

The inspiration for a room?  One item her homeowner can’t live without.  In this room, the wood surrounding the fireplace was an architectural feature from the clients family home.  Brilliantly incorporated here, it become both the focal and the inspiration of the room. I was honored when I spied Segreto Vignettes on the coffee table!

Whitney’s focus is creating spaces which are comfortable for everyday living.  Finding more practical ways to create beautiful spaces, allows a home to be functional and easily maintained. Considering how each family member likes watching TV and types of furniture they prefer sitting on all go into how the furniture is placed.

With emphasis on calm and cozy without a lot of fluff, her adult spaces resemble a spa retreat.  Having the mirrors custom made, we finished them to blend with the antique finish of the dressers!

I just had to share this unique powder which Whitney created from an old architectural piece.

Visualizing how lovely it would look as a vanity, she incorporated a top and antique bowl and we finished the bottom to blend with our plastered walls! LOVE!!!!

I hope you enjoyed this designer spotlight as much as I enjoy working with Whitney and Currie of Nest & Cot Interiors! Thank you Whitney for being a part of this weeks Blog! You are as sweet and down to earth as you are talented!  Till next week!
