Colorado Update!

Jan 09, 2017

Hi Friends! I am sorry it has taken so long to update you on the Colorado home!  I really wanted to finish and show you the progression all at one time.  so we have a three week series from start to finish. It definitely is a big change and a totally different look.

Remember these pictures of the original townhome we purchased, furniture and all? Although hubby John was thrilled with all the furnishings in the unit, I though it felt dark and a bit claustrophobic. He even loved the torn couch and chair, so comfy and impossible to destroy! He does have a point there.

When looking at homes and recommending paint colors, I spend a lot of time thinking about what are the stars of the space and how to enhance them. With the large vaulted ceilings and the beautiful views, I felt like the dark trim stopped your eye at the windows and doors. Wanting to expand the interiors, I decided to paint all of the wood trim and walls a lighter, fresher color.

Always starting with picking hard surfaces like counters, tiles and floors before the paint, here are some choices I selected. I wanted to stay in the warm grays and found most of what I needed at the Home Depot in Avon, which was very near to our new home. It is amazing how far they have come with tile flooring (which looks like wood or concrete!) and their selection of white subway tiles was huge.

Something I have been sharing with my clients, which I found to be so helpful, are the wood chip samples at Home Depot. They sell pre-fab wood floors and also their little sample chips. I found one I liked and sent it to the contractor there so he would be able to make color samples without me. He then sent a photo of the Home Depot sample next to the stained floor sample for me to approve.  They did an awesome job, don’t you think?

Although my strength is picking colors, it was very different with the lighting in Colorado vs. Houston. After countless samples on the walls which all turned baby blue, I chose BM OC-23, Classic Gray. It is light with a hint of gray and I felt it would go with any tone. I was thrilled with this picture he sent with the lighter paint. My eye goes right to the outside!!!

I was replacing all of the sink vanities except for the master and wanted all pre-fab to save time! This one was a splurge from Acero Bella in Houston!! I loved the rustic look and the furniture statement it will create in the powder.

I ended up using the wall-mounted faucet I had purchased for my master bath, but was unable to use them when I found those incredible mirrors at Round Top! Read more about my master bath renovation here!

For the other two bathrooms, I searched the web and was able to find two I liked from All Modern for the bathrooms upstairs. They came with the mirror, faucets and counters. This one was for the Jack-and-Jill bath my son and daughter would be sharing. I used the same grayish wood plank tile floors and subway tile from Home Depot in both bathrooms upstairs.

For Sammy’s room, I went with the white cabinet and mirror. Be sure to ask your contractor, before ordering, how much space you have to work with. There are code restrictions in most places of how close the vanity can be set next to the sink. Most of the websites offer free shipping so this was a much less expensive option. Also, something I learned to specify and not assume, if you are installing pre-fab, freestanding vanities as I did, make sure you tell the contractor to notch out the tile or wood baseboards and set the vanity legs flush against the wall — otherwise, you will have a space from the back wall to the counter.

Look at this (during construction) beautiful shot — yikes, how could John think this didn’t need to be redone?! The contractor put a blue coating over the tub to protect it…this is a great idea for you to request!

Many times when I am trying to figure out how a room will look, I will copy and paste all the items into one email to get a visual of the space. Then, I can refer back and forth until the final selections are made. This is a board I created for my initial concept for bedroom one. It will be fun for us all to see how the room ended up!! I found most of the bedding on Gilt, one of my favorite discount shopping sites. They had a large selection of Belle Epoque linens, a brand I have been so happy with at discounted prices. The dust skirt is Pine Cone Hill. The headboard from Ballard Designs is one of my all time favs and is very reasonably priced on sale for $399!! The vases were previously terracotta from Joyce Horn Antiques, and used in my past master bedroom.  I was thinking of lime washing them and  making them into lamps.

Here are some options I was contemplating for bedroom 2. Which do you like better? The black antique bedside table, I currently own from Boxwood Containers or the more modern ones I found at West Elm. The bed inspiration was from Restoration Hardware and was on sale!

The wood sample is for the look if I change the stain color of the bunk beds–this was the only furniture we kept from the original house. I purchased a combination of this bedding. (1) is the sham and the duvet which is at the bottom from Eddie Bauer bedding, (2) and (4) is from  Pine Cone Hill. Why can’t I be someone that can get everything in one place? I love to mix and match and buy from various sites on sale on line! Then I just pray the colors will all bend together!

I love, love, love this bedroom which is showcased in Segreto Vignettes. Using this feel as inspiration, I wanted to incorporate the antique alter-cloths I had purchased from Joyce Horn Antiques years ago. John’s request was all white bedding. We will see if he wins once again. It was an option to use the night stands her as well.

I wanted to leave you with just one more color inspiration of what is to come with this rug I purchased from Madison Lily! for the den!!

Leslie – it all looks great! Love all your selections. No doubt it will be a stunner. We recently built a mountain home and I had to source everything here in Houston. I either shipped it to our builder in New Mexico or put it in storage here. All the furniture, bedding, kitchen items – everything a house needs, was in storage. It was all loaded on a huge moving truck and then moved in. I wish I had had a local (to the new home) Lowes or Home Depot to work with, but I didn’t. The wall paint SW Accessible Beige looked great at 10,000ft! It was 2yrs of planning and buying but it all turned out great. I can’t wait to see your finished pictures!

So exciting, Leslie!!!! I love seeing the before/afters and hearing about your process. i love the grey walls and the direction you are headed which looks so soothing and elegant. Thank God for Home Depot and Lowe’s near our Arizona fixer, although even those box stores are far from the project which steals so much time when you’re trying to vacation. Best to you as you tackle this project and keep sharing all the details! xox
