Project Design: Extreme Chair Makeovers!

Aug 15, 2016

When I was asked to participate in the upcoming project design on Extreme Chair Makeovers, it started me thinking about all the chair makeovers I had done at my own home!  Although it would be wonderful going into a store and seeing the perfect chair with the perfect fabric, this rarely happens to me!!! Below you will see my chair makeovers and Friday we will post the link to other top design bloggers’ outcomes to their chair challenge!  So stay tuned!!!

Here is just a small sampling of chairs which I have redone at my own home!!!

Project 1: Loving Lucite!!!

6_2w

This is one of my favorite chair redos to date!! Loving Lucite, I thought these vintage chairs were cool for my dining room but something just wasn’t right. And not just the fabric, look at those casters!!!

I found these Lucite rods at Luxholdups on Etsy! They have so many options for finials or caps! Unbelievably, they were the exact same diameter as the chair arms and legs, so…

I had my Lucite guy (everyone has one of those, right?) replace the casters with the curtain rod finials and the arms with simpler brass end caps. We then covered them in a Donghia fabric and I am thrilled with the transformation and my now one-of-a-kind chairs!!!

Project 2: French Country!

Design Project: Extreme Chair Makeover! Segreto Secrets Blog!

If you remember in my kitchen reveal, I showcased my breakfast room with a mix & match of French Country chairs!  But where did they start?

stained chairs

I didn’t take before pictures of these but searching the web I found some similar ones! When you are looking for chairs, look at the lines and the sturdiness of them – the finish and upholstery can easily be changed!!! I found all of mine for under $150 each!!!

Here is one of the finished chairs.  I just used an inexpensive muslin to cover the chairs and bordered each set of chairs a bit differently! This one has a tape to match and small French tacks! Some have double cording, and one of the sets of two have a taupe banding with tacks!

I love the new finish; so much better for the room than when the chairs were stained!!! I double-scotch guarded them to help the fabric hold up to my messy eaters!!!

I love the eclectic mix of chairs! Keeping the same finish and fabric lends interest to the space without becoming busy!!

Design Project 3: Adding a Bit of Hollywood Glam!

Design Project: Extreme Chair Makeover! Segreto Secrets Blog

Trying to desperately use what I have in my home renovation, I wanted to repurpose this French chair which was previously in my bedroom and give it to my daughter for her new space!

Look how it fits in so well to her new room!  She covered it in an inexpensive velvet from High Fashion Home! Kudos to Kirby for designing a beautiful room.  Now that she has moved out, it is a perfect retreat for guests.

Painted in a cream tone, it has a light glaze over the base and is embellished with silver! If you haven’t stopped by the shop lately, my daughter Kirby has taken over the store and is our newest design assistant!  It is fun having her join Segreto!

Design Project 4: Pretty in Pink!

a great chair I found at an estate sale

Although these chairs were shiny mahogany when I found them and already have the updated finish, you can see by the condition of the fabric they were not in the best shape. Buying them for $75 each, they were worth the investment of a redo!!!

Painting them a light tone, glazing them and adding gold leaf really highlighted the delicate carving, which was lost in this chairs previous stained finish.

Covering them in a John Saladino blush pink mohair from Ken Kehoe & Co. completed their transformation!!!

Design Project 5: A Bit of Tuscany!

12w

Finding this old school chair at a closing junk shop, I just had to buy it! Wanting something totally unique, I painted a Tuscan landscape on the wooden chair seat. There are so many stencils, as well, which would be such a fun diversion from fabric! Even though my schedule doesn’t allow for much travel, I think about my trip abroad when I pass my little school chair each day.

I can’t wait to see what these awesome designers are doing with their Extreme Chair Makeovers!! Check back on Friday for the big reveal!! I am looking forward to pick up a few ideas myself!!!! All these blogs are GREAT and truly worth following!!
