Segreto Goes to Cuero

Apr 28, 2015

Segreto  was traveling last week to finish a home in Cuero, Texas. Loving this charming town, I wanted to share it and the project with you!!

Cuero, located about 2.5 hours outside of Houston in central DeWitt County, is the largest city in the county and the county seat with a population of 6841. Look how charming!!!!

Like many small Texas towns, Cuero has a long and rich history!  This wildflower capital of Texas also receives its notoriety from being home to the longest and bloodiest family feud in Texas spanning 3o years, the largest shipper of cattle in the 40’s, and the Turkey Trot!!

What’s a Turkey Trot???  In the late 1800’s the automobile was a rare sight, so in order for a farmer to get his turkey flock to town he had to herd them on foot, much like a cattle drive. Once in town, thousands of turkeys strutted down the streets on the way to their final destination.

In an effort to capitalize on tourism, Cuero hosted its first Turkey Trot in 1912, with upwards of 30,000 people flocking to town to see over 18,000 turkeys herded down Main Street. Not unlike Mardi Gras in New Orleans, visitors were treated to a carnival, big band dances, a football game, floats festooned with turkey feathers, agriculture shows and the crowning of Turkey Trot royalty. Cuero still hosts the Turkey Fest, held the second full weekend of October. I am going to have to go!!!!

Cuero is filled with beautiful homes on the historical registry which carry great housing values!

Maintained and restored, downtown Cuero is filled with many family owned shops selling unique items crafted by Texans including coffees, fine wines, specialty culinary items, rustic linens, apparel and  hosts weekly livestock auctions.

Here is part of the Segreto Crew, with Leslie Simmons, my Sr. Designer, managing the job! The handsome man to the right climbing up the stairs is her new husband, Charles. He probably didn’t realize he was marrying into the Segreto Family as well.  If you missed the post on their beautiful wedding you can view it here!

Still with lots to do, this kitchen is stunning even in its unfinished state. With plastered walls and so many unique elements built in, this has a true European farmhouse appeal!

So creative, plastering between these reclaimed planks creates such a wonderful effect!

They carried the treatment into a powder as well!!!  Charming!!!

Another bath gets a special treatment all its own.  With plaster as the backdrop, these antique grates re-purposed into large scale sconces provide a  beautiful element in the formal powder!

I love the stone, brick ceiling and reclaimed elements mixed together in the master bath, imparting a sense of the past but fitted with completely modern conveniences.

If you’ll notice to the left of the bath, the shower is plastered rather than using tile or stone. Water resilient, the only maintenance required is to re-soap the surface every 6 months!!!

The walls in this game room were paneled with new pine and then aged to look reclaimed!

How fun are the loft and closet doors in this little boy’s room?!

And if you think the home is awesome, just look at that barn!!!

I hope you enjoyed the tour of Cuero Texas and the beautiful home for the soooooo hospitable owners with which we worked! As you can see, we are really enjoying our time here in this charming town! I will update you with pictures when the house is completed!  Till next week!
