Pink, the defining color of femininity and love, is representative of so many things. From the petal soft shades of the cherry blossom tree to the hottest fuchsia lipstick on the cosmetic counter, pink has long maintained a strong association with positive energy that even psychologists have taken notice of.

In most European languages, word for pink is a direct derivative of the rose flower. In French and Dutch it is rose’, in German, Portugese, Spanish, and Italian the word is rosa, in Russian the color is known as rozoviy, and in Finnish it is called pinkki.

Palace of the Winds

The 1700’s marked the ‘golden age’ for pink, and it became a common color seen on mansions and churches across Europe. This was primarily a result of the use of brick or sandstone, typical building materials of the time.

Pictured above, the Ostankino Palace in Russia was a country home built in the 18^th century  for the then richest man in the country, Pyotr Sheremetev. More than just pink, the home is built entirely of wood – the Siberian pine trees used were plastered to appear as if stone – amazing!

This remarkable, pink chandelier, the largest in the world, was a gift from Queen Elizabeth for a Sultan residing in the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul in the 1800’s; quite the gesture!

Pink calms and reassures our emotional energies, alleviating feelings of anger, aggression, resentment, abandonment and neglect. Studies have confirmed that exposure to large amounts of pink can have a calming effect on the nerves. This pink room from Atlanta Homes seems to have just that effect.

Believe it or not, violent and aggressive prisoners have been successfully calmed by placing them in a pink rooms.

Maybe when the kids were little I should have had a pink time-out corner to calm those toddler to teenage nerves. The color pink represents the sweetness and innocence of the child in all of us!

Pink is a wonderful accent color in otherwise neutral rooms. This combination of cool grays nudges a space into the realm of fun without losing its air of sophistication.

Perhaps due to its feminine nature and association with women, pink portrays feelings of giving and receiving. Mixed with browns and golds, this bedroom has a romantic air!

And I couldn’t complete my list of favorite pinks without including a few paint pics of my own! Benjamin Moore’s Warm Blush and Farrow and Ball’s Pink Ground are two subtle, sophisticated pinks which won’t overtake the room. When choosing, a tip to remember is that pinks greatly intensify when painted on the wall so I always pick more mellow and subdued hues than I would like to see on the wall.
