Not Just A Door…

May 17, 2015

Doors- so much more than just a means of passage. Whether they lead to a guestroom, your shoe closet or welcome others into your home, doors greet and bid farewell to us all! Read along as I explore all of my favorite trends and ideas for beautiful door design!

First impressions mean the most and a reclaimed door is a wonderful way to announce a space long before it’s entered. What used to be reserved for just the front door, doors with personality and character have made their way into every space of the home.

As seen above, this neon pocket really pops! Installed in what is an otherwise neutral gray and white kitchen, I love how the door becomes as much an accessory as a means of egress.

Who wouldn’t enjoy relaxing in this beautiful room?! I love how the use of paint makes this door even more of an architectural feature. The cool gray and navy hues can be seen throughout the room in a variety of patterns but takes special precedence on the door’s panels. The result is a doorway that doubles as a piece of art!

One of my favorite trends on doors is the use of mirrors. A perfect fit for a master bathroom or closet, mirrors on your doors can be both useful and visually interesting; much prettier than the hanging door mirrors of yesterday!

If covering the whole door isn’t your style, consider adding mirrors inside the recessed panels. This small inclusion looks so charming and reflects any existing light which would do wonders to brighten up a dark hall or entryway!

Not simply meant to pass through, doors are also used to conceal.  This closet is disguised by what appears to be a wall of shelves lined with whitewashed book spines. Such a playful and inventive way to add even more character to a wall of storage!

The cover of Segreto Style, dressed by Designer Kara Childress, features a doorway designed to blend seamlessly with the paneled walls in which it resides. The chosen finish was completed in a soothing blay-geen tone and leads to a French salle de bain.  Just an exciting note, due to the limited quantities available for this edition the books are running out fast! If you haven’t received yours, order here.

Speaking of disguises, doors become creative ways in which secret rooms are concealed and revealed! What appears to be a piece of large scale art is actually an entrance into a game room! So much fun, the door image can be a clue as to what room lies behind and are a guaranteed, built-in conversation piece !

How amazing is this inventive pantry niche!? Such a big trend these days, sliding doors attached to a track system allow you to install any type of door. Be it be a barn door or a vintage gate, the options are endless! One of the most significant advantages of the track door is that they not only have a cool appearance but they don’t open directly into the room; taking up only what space is necessary for them to slide on the wall.

While most tracks can be custom crated by any metal craftsman, here is a website which sells the systems readymade! Check out Rolling Door Designs for a variety of reasonably priced rod and hanger kit options sure to make your project a cinch!

Here at Segreto Finishes we are in the business of adding character to both old and new! Through the use of decorative painting, centuries of character can be added in a fraction of the time and customized to suit the style of any home!

These cabinet doors were given the appearance of grand, built-in armoires.   We added warmth and depth by applying a custom glaze in a two-toned fashion. What a stunning living room designed by Designer Julie Dodson!!!

This large pocket door is visible from the den, kitchen and breakfast areas. To add visual interest to the otherwise plain white box these doors created on the wall, a texture was applied followed by glazing to give mudroom entrance some pizazz!!  The room was perfection after The Owen Group furnished the space! This is one of the beautiful homes which will be featured in Segreto Vignettes.

I loved working on this Pink Ribbon project with the talented designer, Julie Dodson! Her creation of these doors leading into the master bath ended up being one of my favorite designs in the home! Upholstered in vinyl leather and featuring a nail head trim pattern, the effect is luxurious and says ‘welcome to my retreat!!!’

One of my favorite transformations, these pantry doors feature an aged blue finish applied to newly built doors. With the addition of a metal insert, the result is rustic, well-worn and completely charming!

Intended to hide dish storage and pantry items, we aged these newly built shutters much like the ones in my office. Featured in Segreto Style, designer Darla Bankston May did a beautiful job on the entire house!

A Veranda home we plastered, this master bedroom retreat designed by Eleanor Cummings includes a grand entrance.
